October 21-22

Tuesday morning the sun was shining, the wind was nothing more than a gentle breeze, the sea was as calm as could be. We set off with 13 others to explore some of the beaches around Sfakia. Three things to see in this picture: the White Mountains, the deep gorge (one of many in the area), and the calm sea.

Beach #1 lots of course sand

Interesting erosion

Masses of conglomerate rocks

Funny looking feet

And a great exit sign

Beach #2much finer sand. More conglomerate rocks, and a church.

And the ocean was still acting like it didn't even know how to make a wave.

Inside the church, I kept my eye on the boat

While I checked out the frescos

Closed the door

And went to explore the grove of pine trees behind the beach.

Lunch in Loutro

Just us and 13 friends

Lunch was delicious! But the watermelon was the absolute best!

After a walk around the village we were on our way again

Would you believe I didn't even get my camera out at the next beach? Sweet Water Beach was a new experience for everybody else on the tour, but for me it was like an old friend. No need for photos.

The next pictures are of the coast line between the beaches. Rough country this is! Rough indeed!

And still the water was almost glassy smooth. We never gave the weather a thought as we ate dinner, visited with new friends, and danced like no one was watching.

Next morning, we had our last resort breakfast, packed our bags, hit the little resort shop to take advantage of their end of season sale, checked out, and visited with Sue until the bus picked us up to take us back to Sfakia. We unpacked, had a rest and went downtown for supplies. I made potato soup for dinner

Which we enjoyed in the glow of yet another glorious sunset.

You may have noticed the clouds gathering. The weather was about to change dramatically!
